Species

A mineral classification used in identifying gem materials.

Variety

A recognized subdivision within a mineral species, often associated with color or another characteristic.

Synthetic gemstone

A manufactured counterpart sharing the essential properties of the corresponding natural gem material.

Treatment

A process applied to modify a gemstone's appearance or other characteristics.

Identification

A conclusion about the material examined within the relevant service scope.

Grading

Assessment of stated quality characteristics under a defined system.

Geographic origin opinion

A laboratory conclusion about source location within the available evidence and examination scope.

Provenance

The documented history associated with an item.

Report number

The identifying number assigned to a laboratory document.

Report scope

The examination and conclusions covered by a particular service.

Mounted

Set into jewelry or another supporting structure.

Estimated result

A value or assessment expressed as an estimate rather than a direct, unrestricted measurement or determination.

Inconclusive

A result that does not establish the requested conclusion within the examination performed.

Verification

Checking a document or identifier against an available official record.

Appraisal

An opinion of monetary value for a stated purpose and context.
